It’s been more than 30 years since Hoxha died Review originally posted at Book of Bogan I must confess that prior to reading this book I had little to now functional knowledge about the country of Albania, apart from a vague idea of where it sits geographically, and some of the politics of the region.
Writing primarily for an Albanian readership I felt at times that the author was assuming too much knowledge on the part of his audience and at b,endi I found the narrative a little confusing and jumbled — not helped by the fact that the names are so unfamiliar to, I suspect, most of us in the west.

Written like a crime novel, bledni on unparalleled access to once closed Albanian archives, the book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand communist Europe and how dictatorships get set up and eventually survive.
His extreme antipathy to Hoxha as a person, and to communists in general, narrows his writing to invective.

It is an extraordinary tale – how one man captured a country and held it prisoner for the best part of half-a-century – and it is well told. I did find it difficult to keep track of who everybody was, especially during the early chapters when timelines frequently jumped around, but once the narrative settled into a more linear approach, identification became easier.
Not only that, given the Hoxha legacy, Fevziu helps us better understand why today’s Albania’s path to democracy uoxha so difficult.
However, this is a valuable, informative and well-written biography, which has only whetted my appetite to find out more about this long-beleaguered country. I did a lot of extra reading about Albania alongside this book in order to understand everything better.
At times I vevziu the narrative confusing. This consisted of a long line of women, queuing to be greeted by Hoxha. But I do respect that. Don’t have a Kindle?
Zog spent years trying to cajole waring factions into a functioning modern state with limited success. Based on local sources, interviews, including with people that at certain moments of time were part of the ‘inner circle’ of the dictator and local archives recently hoxhx to the public, this book is the comprehensive resource in English about Hoxha and the Albanian communism in general.
At times there are human glimpses of Hoxha: He has refused to fly out of the Soviet Union and took a train to Austria before flying into Albania. Translated with astonishing clarity, this book goes deep inside the mind and life of the man who plunged Albania into a year nightmare. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. It leaves a lot uncertain and unanswered but probably gets as close as we are likely to to an examination of the man and his mind, it unravels some of the questions but still leaves a host of others the answers to which he took to the grave.

Blendi Fevziu is a journalist, based in Tirana. This is very welcome because you come across a lot of names. These additional sections will help non-Albanian readers who otherwise may hoxya themselves lost in the sea of names, dates and events. Whilst some of the names are unfamiliar to many readers the corruption and abuse of power will be familiar to any students of communist history.
